Literacy
• Read to your child! Reading aloud builds many language skills.
• Visit the library often, hear a storyteller, or watch a puppeteer.
• Young children like to see their name in print and have a desire to know
the letters in their name. Have children start with their own name when
attempting to recognize letters.
• For writing names, let practice first letter uppercase and all others
lowercase, in sand, small tray of rice, shaving cream, pudding (YUM!),
finger paint, glitter crayons.
• Place magnetic letters on your refrigerator at children’s eye level so they
can manipulate.
• Create a writing toolbox to store fun writing utensils, different types of paper,
envelopes, stickers etc.
• Read, recite, sing and act out nursery rhymes, silly songs, etc.
• Create new, silly names for example, if name is Sam, his name can turn into
Bam, Ham, Mam, etc.
• Play “I Spy” for things that start with different letters or sounds.
